Sue Sluglett

In making collaged drawings as starting points for my paintings I create "haphazard" environments and through submitting control to a contingent presence, the results are deliberately awkward. The collages create a "Theme" or atmosphere for the painting, not to provide subject matter, rather as an investigation into the formal qualities of the imagery. The filtration of this into painting encourages unconscious impulses, or better still, a pulse, something alive that brings about fortuitous accidents, sometimes with humorous consequences. The grid if it maps anything, maps the surface of the painting itself. It provides the ground in which everything has the potential for change. This is akin to the communicative impulse of surrealist dream imagery. Painting for me is alchemistic, paint is transformed into image, paint and image transform into a third new thing sometimes hard to name.
